Jeremy is a model railroader with a passion for the artistic and creative side of the hobby. His interests span railroad modeling, custom lettering and decal design, freight car detailing, and the visual storytelling that brings a railroad to life. From Colorado’s narrow-gauge scenic railroads to New Mexico’s Santa Fe Southern Railway, Jeremy has drawn inspiration not only from the landscapes these railroads traverse but also from the people dedicated to preserving their history.
Jeremy’s creative projects include the Arvada Western Railroad, a modern era railroad inspired by Colorado’s narrow gauge lines, and the Los Alamos Northern Line, a fictional railroad drawing inspiration from the D&RGW’s Santa Fe Branch. Through these projects, he explores how color, typography, weathering, and regional identity can come together to create believable, distinctive freelance railroad rooted in history to create character all its own.
What the Art of Model Railroading Means to Me
To me, model railroading is about more than building trains and scenery. It is an opportunity to develop an artistic vision and tell stories and history through the details of a model railroad. Inspired in part by the late Malcolm Furlow, I have developed a particular interest in the intersection of art and railroad modeling.
From the design of railroad heralds and paint schemes to the subtle weathering and details that give each freight car its own personality, I enjoy exploring the creative possibilities of the hobby. Furlow’s San Juan Central is a great example of how artistic expression and railroad modeling can come together to create something truly distinctive yet capture the feel and emotions of Colorado. That same spirit inspires me to develop freelance model railroads that not only have their own visual identity but also operate with the realism and purpose of their full size counterparts.
