Mike Ostertag is a model railroader whose work showcases the creativity, attention to detail, and operational realism that make the hobby so compelling. Through his freelance S-scale layout, the Farlin Terminal Railroad, Mike has developed a distinctive railroad inspired by the industrial railroading and regional railroad traditions of the American Midwest.

The Farlin Terminal represents Mike’s approach to building a model railroad that goes beyond scenery and equipment. Its concept draws on the character of Midwestern railroading, incorporating industrial customers, freight movements, and the everyday work of a short line railroad. From switching industries to moving freight between customers and connecting railroads, the Farlin Terminal provides a setting for realistic railroad operations and the stories that develop around them.

A key part of the Farlin Terminal’s appeal is its connection to prototype railroading. By drawing inspiration from real railroad practices, Mike brings a sense of purpose to the layout’s track arrangements, industries, and operating sessions. The result is a railroad designed not simply to display trains, but to recreate the work and challenges involved in serving freight customers. This emphasis on operations gives the layout a distinctive identity and demonstrates how a freelance railroad can feel believable while still allowing room for imagination and personal creativity.

Mike’s modeling also highlights the possibilities of S scale, a scale that offers a compelling balance between the physical presence of larger models and the space needed to create a functional railroad. Through the Farlin Terminal, he demonstrates how thoughtful planning, realistic operations, and a clear railroad concept can come together to create an engaging model railroading experience.

At its heart, the Farlin Terminal is an expression of Mike’s interest in the railroads that serve industries and communities every day. It reflects the idea that some of the most interesting railroading happens away from major main lines, in the yards, industrial spurs, and local freight operations that keep goods moving.

Mike’s work offers an example of how prototype inspiration and freelance creativity can work together to produce a model railroad with its own history, purpose, and personality.
